For one who has conquered the mind…
Bhagavad Gītā 6.7
Sanskrit:
जितात्मनः प्रशान्तस्य परमात्मा समाहितः ।
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु तथा मानापमानयोः ॥ ६.७ ॥
Transliteration:
jitātmanaḥ praśāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ |
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu tathā mānāpamānayoḥ || 6.7 ||
Meaning:
For one who has conquered the mind and attained tranquility, the Supreme Self is already reached. To such a person, happiness and distress, heat and cold, honour and dishonour are all the same.
Context (important nuance):
When the mind is mastered, tranquility arises. In that stillness, the Self is recognised as ever-present.
Heat and cold.
Pleasure and pain.
Honour and dishonour.
The world continues to change, but the one who has conquered the mind is no longer carried away by its opposites.
Master the mind. Find stillness. Know the Self.
